Light Up Your Home

I frequently get asked ‘what adds character to a home?’ That is definitely a loaded question, however, I would have to say start with beautiful lighting. I’ve had so much fun with choosing the light fixtures in our home, it really brings in so much personality. By popular demand, I thought it was time to share a collection of lighting from Monika Hibbs Home that I’ve personally included in my own home and how it really brings a statement to each room and space. I hope it inspires you to invest in beautiful lighting with intention towards your own homes and spaces.

Choosing light fixtures was such a daunting task during the home build process, but I am so happy with what was chosen for each space. It was definitely something Troy and I had to hammer out in the early stages of the build. That being said, there are still rooms in our home that are missing lights. Either I haven’t decided on the right one yet – some I’ve been waiting to come back in stock due to COVID – or just the humbling reminder that we are also on a budget and things just have to wait and need to be spread out! I’m sure so many of you know what I’m talking about! ‘One room at a time’, I like to tell myself!

So, let’s start off by talking about sconces. Sconces bring not only function but interest, from task lighting to decorative… I love them all!  Perhaps you have a dark corner or reading nook? The gentle light of task or functional lighting may be what you need. I’ve chosen the Graves Pivoting Sconce by our window seat (as seen below) and it really completes the quaint space. I knew I had to include the floral plaster Alberto Sconce for Lillya’s room the moment I saw them, they are feminine yet sophisticated with their elegant design touch. I love sconces, like the Camille Sconce or the Olivia Sconce in powder rooms or bathrooms; when placed correctly they add wonderful symmetry in an intimate space like a bathroom.

One of my favourite office or bedroom elements is always the addition of a floor or table lamp. In Lillya’s room, I included the ever-so-beautiful Parasol Table Lamp, the woven detail suits the southern charm and it lights her bedside perfectly for a bedtime story. (I also love that it has a dimmer switch, which works perfectly for a nightlight).  For Liam, the Phoebe Table Lamp had the fun, mid-century modern look that complimented his bedroom. The perfect touch for that older boys’ room I’m going for. Our Hope Table Lamp looks timeless and grand on our console in the foyer. It’s unique plaster texture suits any cozy living space!

In my home, you’ll notice there are lots of hanging lights, from pendants, chandeliers and lanterns. Again lots of added character in every hallway and open space. Down the front hallway, we’ve lined four Katie Globe Pendants that I’ve always had my eye on and loved. Don’t ever be afraid to hang multiples, it leads the eye down your hall or space. If you’re a fan of adding textures like me, nothing says natural texture more than the Willow Pendant or the Sea Island Pendant; OR if you’re into intricate details, the lovely Coco Magnolia Hanging Pendant and Vanessa Basin Chandelier are great contenders. They each are truly a piece of art. For a sleek, classic statement piece, the Piaf Chandelier is breathtaking. We’ve hung it in our great room over our coffee table and couches. Troy and I both agree that it’s one of our favourite light fixtures in the entire house. It’s so simple yet has so much class and beauty to it! That being said, whenever I walk into any room, hallway or bathroom, I always admire each light … it is one of my favourite parts of interior design.

With different finishes, you can bring each light to your own liking. From polished nickel, brass, iron, natural weaves or beaded textures, each are pieces of art hung in your home. Thinking about updating or adding lighting to your home, we’ve got you covered! I’ve put so much love into the lighting section at MH Home. I am constantly adding new lights I love or plan to include in my own home.  Remember that most lights are offered in different sizes and finishes. And if you can’t quite find what you’re looking for, never hesitate to contact us… our Team is here to help with your lighting questions.
